The Creation of the Uber Tyrant(tm), an Overview by Dachande
Ubertyrant by Dachande

Parts Needed:
  • Complete Plastic Carnifex kit
  • v.1 Monsterous Creature Sprue X2 (plus some extra Deathspitters)
  • v.2 Monsterous Creature Sprue X2
  • Plastic Genestealer Extended Carapace plates
  • Heavy Gauge Wire
  • 3-4 mm Plasticard
  • 2 mm Plasticard
  • Sprue leftovers
  • Paper Clips (Large and thin) for pins
  • Green Stuff (Kneadatite) - (GS)
  • Needle Files
  • Sculpting Tools (I use the GW one as well as dental tools)
  • Dremel Multi-tool (Essential piece of equipment)
-large sanding drum, small sanding drum, cutting disks, drill bits, cutting points

This is the first large-scale conversion I ever did that came out EXACTLY how I wanted it to, which I'm quite proud of. Total time I put into it was 2-3 hours a night for about 2 weeks (this was to allow for proper drying of the GS).

This report is going to be an overview of the conversions I did, not a 'how-to' guide. I believe in creativity, and if you want your own Uber Tyrant, then design one, don't copy verbatim. That's boring.

So, with that off my chest (sorry for any crunched toes), here's my avatar of Hive Fleet Ecclectic.

Arms: Bone Sword

Ubertyrant by Dachande
Based on a Venom Cannon arm, minus the hands and gun parts.

An older MC Scything Talon was cut off at the wrist and sanded down on each side for a uniform width. Then, thick plasticard was cut and shaped to create the rear length of the blade, and glued to the front section. Once dry, this part was then pinned to the arm. After this, I GS'd the gaps with appropriately 'niddy patterns and added an old biomorph small spike plate. Also, bulk was added to the upper arm to create more 'strength.'

Afterwards, I took two blade-plates from the new MC sprue, cut off the plate parts and sanded down the base of the spikes, notched and fit them to the large blade, GS'ing as needed. I also added a little claw from a Deathspitter to the inner top curve of the back of the blade for detail.

As an afterthought, I added a pipe from the Barbed Strangler to the outside of the arm for effect.

This design is a variant of one of the concept sketches for the new range. Same with the Lash Whip.

Lash Whip

Based on a Venom Cannon feeder arm, minus the hand and pipe.

I drilled out the front where the wrist was and added a length of wire that was the proper width. Again, GS for the gaps and shape. I also added some older armor plates to the top and another Barbed Strangler pipe to the outside. As with the Bone Sword arm, I added some 'strength' to the upper arm with GS. I also added some small claws from Deathspitters to the sides for detail.

The end of the whip is the V-shaped bit from the Carnifex sprue, with the underside sanded down, and GS'd into place with added detail.

Upper Scything Talons

Based on a Venom Cannon feeder arm, minus the hand and pipe.

I cut the elbow spikes off and added large Carnifex thorn spikes in their place. I then added the lower Venom Cannon blades to the top plates of the talons, and pipes from the Barbed Stranglers to the inner elbow joints.

Head
Ubertyrant by Dachande
The head was based on the generic Carnifex head. I cut off the chin 'heel' and GS'd the jaw to be heavier and have a spike-tipped cleft. GS tendons were added to the sides of the jaws in the spirit of Alien. The top plates were extended and sharpened with GS, and small spikes were added on top with thin plasticard. I cut off the tongue and drilled out the front, to allow for either an implant attack or bioplasma options.

For the nose blade, I used another old MC scything talon cut off at the wrist and sanded down on the sides. I used a Dremel and needle files to shape the inner edge of the blade. After gluing it in place, GS was added to fill gaps and add detail.

Trunk
Ubertyrant by Dachande
I removed the posts from the hips and cut pins to attach the legs to the pelvis. To add height, I cut the lower legs at the ankle, used pins to add about 3/8" and GS'd the gap, plus added details like tendons and plates. The claws from the tops of the older MC Scything Talons were added as larger versions of the Tyrant toe-claws, with appropriate GS'ing, and little claws from Deathspitters were added above the larger claws for detail.

The tail of the Carnifex was cut below the last plate, drilled out and a heavy-gauge wire was inserted. GS was used to fill the gap and create a better transition. The tail tip is the scythe-tail biomorph, with a bladed armor-plate underneath. GS was added as necessary. I also added a few spikes along the end of the tail for detail.

The top of the trunk was removed above the pelvis, and the first couple of back spines were removed.

Abdomen

This was a difficult part. I didn't like the arch of the original model, so I straightened the posture with lots of GS, pins, some armor plates and extra sprue frame as space filler.

Torso
Ubertyrant by Dachande
To start, I removed the collar bone and the first rib, then cut 3/16" off the last armor plate. To get a more bulky and powerful feel, I wanted to add another carapace plate to the top, and for the back chimneys to go the whole way up rather than end in the middle of the back like on the Carnifex. This would require the creation of two new parts.

After lots of cutting and sanding of carapace plates, I matched the new piece on top of the first one, filling the gaps with GS'd tendons. This also gave the back five plates to match the head template design that GW follows (more or less).

Then for the new chimneys, I cut two new Venom Cannon barrels and two new Barbed Strangler barrels in half and meshed them together. More sanding and GS'ing was needed to shape the pieces into proper chimneys.

I wanted the new parts to be a part of the upper carapace, so the pieces were split-cut and sanded, then pinned in place and GS'd for gap-filling and detail, with Genestealer plates added for continuity. After these were in place, I modified the rest of the chimneys to match the new ones, in that they have the same downward angle rather than have two really big chimneys and six little ones.

I didn't like that the upper scything talons were in a vertical line with the lower limbs, so I widened the upper arm sockets by 1/8".

I re-sculpted the collar bone section, and added more detail so that the rib-cage blended with the top of the model better. I also added detail to the spaces between the ribs, then created a neck from pins and GS.

I used thorn spikes and GS for the flesh hooks, and removed the sternum spikes and GS'd ridges in their place.

After some finalizing GS and sanding, with the model assembled and towering over everything else on my desk, I realized I was done.

I find with all large conversions, there's always a point that you look at it and wonder what else you can do. I've learned through bitter experience that that's the point to stop, walk away from it for a day, then go back and look at it. If you feel that it STILL needs something (I did this three times with this project), go for it. Otherwise, grab the primer and enjoy a job well done.

The Uber Tyrant is going to be a removable part of a diorama I'm planning for the next US Baltimore Games Day. So with that, the next installment of the report is going to be the painting process, which I expect to take much longer than the actual creation process.

I hope you enjoyed the read, and if you decide to challenge yourself with a project like this, have fun with it. And buy Advil.
