Seafex by Entomologist

The idea for the Seafex came to me while I was contemplating a diving beetle.  Several types of insect (and other animals, for that matter) have adapted from a life on land to a life in the water.  So I began to wonder what a carnifex would look like if it evolved for a life in the ocean.  My mind was flooded with images of webbed feet, fins, tentacles and anything else vaguely aquatic.  So I dipped into my pile of 'fex bitz and readied the green stuff, then got to work.

For starters, I re-posed the legs into a backward, swimming type of position.  Then I began working on the tail, giving it a large fin to propel the 'fex through the briny deep.  I found that a "skeleton" of flesh hooks with a bit of green stuff webbing worked well as the basis for the fins, so I added smaller ones onto the ribcage and the sides of the head.  A couple of dark pegasus wings were placed in the posterior arm sockets.  They would be too small for wings, but just about the right size for another set of fins.  The feet also needed to become webbed, and a few genestealer talons and some green stuff worked quite well for that.  I had thought about removing the back chimneys, but then I realized that, with still more green stuff, they would form a nice pair of dorsal fins.  For the mouth, I used the tongues from carnifex and genestealer acid maws with a little green stuff webbing around the base.  A pair of crushing claws was essential in the front arm sockets, since they are so characteristic of the more famous aquatic crustaceans.  For the front carapace, I decided on the spore cysts.  This was mainly for a more textured appearance, reminiscent of the barnacles one might expect to see on oceanic leviathans.  Now all the beast needed was a coat of paint.

Well, a coat of paint and a base to "swim" over.  For the base, I started by anchoring a few flying base components to a large base using green stuff.  I had spent some time at a marine biology lab, so I tried to think what sort of Tyranid parts would look good as sessile sea life.  A varied assortment of bitz found their way into the base, along with (yes, you guessed it), still more green stuff.

So now it was time to paint.  Thinking aquatically, I started with shades of blue, making the fin membranes progressively lighter to complement the darker, heavily armored body.  Shadow grey and similar shades were then used to highlight the carapace.  For the tentacles, I chose a combination of blood red and warlock purple.  The purple worked so well, I decided to use more of it elsewhere.  A little patterning, chiefly rendered in warlock purple and liche purple, and the color scheme was complete.  I repeated the overall color scheme on the base, adding a little scaly green and hawk turquoise here and there just to make the sea life a little more distinctive.
Seafex Base
With the completion of the base, the Seafex was finished, at least for now.  Based on a few ideas from friends, I've thought of expanding on it, making it the centerpiece of a diorama.  As one person suggested, I may have it chasing a submarine or perhaps some hapless space marine in scuba gear.  However, that will have to wait for a little while.  Too many other projects to work on.
