Gigas Swarms by Mr Pink

The tyranids are ever evolving. It would seem that just as quickly as we discover one of their weaknesses, they find some way to counteract it. The most recent example would be the creation of the Gigas Protocol by the Ordo Xenos (referred to simply as "shoot the big ones" by the more lowly servants
of the imperium). This protocol was drafted up by the Ordo several years ago and had wide implementation across the imperium by all military branches. The protocol stated that, when facing Tyranid swarms, personnel should give the larger, synaptic Tyranid constructs (such as warriors and tyrants) priority targeting, citing that the elimination of these synaptic constructs would cause the smaller ones to break and flee. The Gigas protocols also outlined detailed training programs that would teach the imperial military personnel how to recognize synaptic constructs and how best to eliminate them. However, the majority of the military branches did not spend time on the training component of the protocols, choosing instead to target all large tyranid constructs before their smaller kin. The Ordo Xenos attempted to emphasize how important it was to target the proper constructs, but it was already too late to change the ways of the military branches. Imperial forces targeted all larger constructs exclusively, sometimes even to the exclusion of the smaller creatures. This strategy succeeded in eliminating a significant portion of the synaptic creatures, as well as a good number of other less-essential creatures, but it also lead to the evolution of lower level synapse creatures (referred to tentatively as Hive Nodes) to fill the synaptic voids left when larger constructs were destroyed. The imperial forces' inability to properly adhere to the Gigas protocols, particularly in the area of recognizing the influence of synaptic creatures, meant that there were several instances where whole imperial platoons were overcome and utterly destroyed by gaunt constructs lead by hive node mutants. The imperial forces would eliminate all large tyranid constructs only to be surprised when the lesser creatures continued their advance without the larger creatures.

'Fex Last Stand

More recently, there appears to have been another change in the swarms that
may have been driven by the imperium's increased focus on targeting larger
Tyranids. The Ordo Xenos has termed this new evolution as the emergence of
"Gigas Swarms," so named after the botched protocols that could well have
spawned them. These swarms are typified by a significant increase in the
number of large creatures (particularly of the tyrant and carnifex genus),
as well as by the creatures being generally tougher and more resistant to
imperial ordinance. There have even been reported cases of the larger
creatures in the Gigas swarms exhibiting regenerative capabilities, a
bio-modification long thought to be aberrant ot to have been abandoned by
the Hive Mind. The proliferation and increased resilience of the "big ones"
in these swarms means that the imperium's practice of "shooting the big
ones" is quickly becoming ineffective. Regional military leaders have sent
numerous appeals to the Ordo Xenos for a quick solution to this problem, but
the appeals appear to have fallen on deaf ears.
